Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
This hormonal disorder is caused by several cysts on the ovaries. A woman may develop PCOS in adolescence or adulthood. Your menstrual cycles may be abnormal, or you may not get a period at all.
We don’t know what causes PCOS but there seems to be strong link between the disorder and insulin resistance, meaning your body doesn’t use insulin efficiently. Extra insulin and extra androgens in your body make it easier for you to gain weight and harder to take it off! Not everyone with PCOS has insulin resistance, but many do. If you are insulin resistant you may have irregular periods and ovulation won't always occur, causing infertility.
It’s challenging to lose weight, but studies show that losing as little as 5% of your body weight, through regular exercise and following a healthy diet, can be enough to help control your insulin levels and correct your menstrual cycle. Losing weight might not be possible or enough of a fix to help you get pregnant. Fertility drugs can also be used to help achieve a pregnancy.
