Recurrent Pregnancy Loss

There are many ways we can help a woman conceive after recurrent pregnancy loss

Our Indianapolis infertility clinic provides comprehensive support to women facing recurrent pregnancy loss. This type of loss involves two or more consecutive miscarriages occurring before 20 weeks of gestation. While it’s common for women and men to feel heartbroken about pregnancy losses, we can offer hope with our thorough testing and effective fertility treatments that often result in a healthy pregnancy.

What testing do we utilize for women after recurrent pregnancy loss?

Evaluating medical records is one of the first steps that the specialists at our Indianapolis infertility clinic take when supporting a woman who has had multiple miscarriages. After reviewing the woman’s medical history, our team can recommend tests to help identify the cause of the miscarriages.

Genetic screening. A comprehensive genetic test can offer valuable insight about why a woman has had recurrent miscarriages. This is because chromosomal abnormalities and other genetic conditions can lead to pregnancy loss.

Blood tests. Bloodwork can help the doctor discover whether a woman has issues with her immune system or hormone levels. A blood test can also expose issues like autoantibodies, potential blood clotting complications, pelvic inflammatory disease and sexually transmitted infections.

Pelvic ultrasound. This evaluation allows our specialists to assess the health of a woman’s reproductive organs. It can also detect fibroids, polyps and other uterine challenges.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This simple procedure can help our doctors assess the health of a woman’s fallopian tubes. It can also give them more information about issues in the uterus that could prevent embryo implantation.

Endometrial biopsy. A small biopsy of the uterine lining can help determine whether the lining is able to support a pregnancy.

If the initial tests don’t reveal enough information about the potential cause of the recurrent pregnancy loss, the doctor might recommend a surgical evaluation of infertility.

Which fertility treatments can help a woman welcome a baby?

After evaluating the test results, the doctor can often recommend treatments to help a woman avoid another pregnancy loss. There are a variety of treatments that can be especially effective for women navigating recurrent pregnancy loss.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A). If the doctor suspects that chromosomal issues led to a woman’s past miscarriages, they may recommend IVF with PGT-A. This treatment can help ensure that the doctor transfers a healthy embryo to the woman’s uterus during IVF.

Hysteroscopy. This procedure allows a fertility specialist to correct uterine issues like fibroids, polyps, scar tissue and other conditions that could cause a pregnancy loss.

Medications for excessive blood clotting. Medications like aspirin and heparin can help if autoimmune problems are causing the pregnancy issues.

Medications for a hormonal imbalance. Medications to manage thyroid problems, uncontrolled diabetes, elevated prolactin or other hormonal challenges can support the progression of a healthy pregnancy.

The doctors at our Indianapolis infertility clinic can help women discover the cause of their pregnancy loss and make a treatment plan to help them fulfill their dream of parenthood.  Contact us for more information about fertility treatments after pregnancy loss.
