Conceiving in Your 20s and 30s

It’s important to know the facts about conceiving in your 20s and 30s

Knowledge is power, so Midwest Fertility Specialists (MFS) strives to help you know what to expect when conceiving in your 20s and 30s. Most women are at their peak fertility in their 20s, so it’s the perfect time to start trying for a family. However, most women in their 30s also have time to conceive. To know what to expect on your journey to parenthood in your 20s and 30s, our Indiana fertility center team has compiled reproductive facts about these decades of life.

The basics of female fertility

At birth, females have their lifetime supply of eggs in their ovaries. Once the average woman is in her 20s, she will typically have hundreds of thousands of eggs available for family building. As a result, if you and your partner are healthy and fertile, you should have about a 30% chance of conceiving each month, if you have intercourse around the time you ovulate.

Egg quality and quantity tend to decline a bit when women reach their late-20s or early-30s. As a result, a 30-year-old woman has a 20% chance of conceiving each month. By the age of 35, although most women are still able to conceive on their own, many discover that conceiving is more difficult without fertility treatments.

Common fertility issues when conceiving in your 20s and 30s

Infertility tends to be less common for women in their 20s and 30s. However, it can still occur. Our Indiana fertility center team typically sees the following causes of infertility when treating patients in these age groups.

  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Diminished ovarian reserve (egg supply)
  • Male infertility
  • Ovulatory disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Uterine abnormalities

If you or your partner receives one of these diagnoses, you shouldn’t be discouraged. Infertility is a common and often treatable condition that affects millions of individuals and couples in the United States. You aren’t alone, and the team at MFS can help you.

When to seek help with conceiving in your 20s and 30s

If you are under age 35, you should contact our Indiana fertility center for an appointment after being unable to conceive after one year of trying. When you reach age 35, you should call our team after seeing negative pregnancy tests for six months. However, if you have known risk factors for infertility, you shouldn’t wait. Consider making an appointment soon if you are having difficulty conceiving.

At your first appointment, your doctor will review you and your partner’s medical and family histories. You can also expect male and female infertility testing. The results can help our doctors recommend a customized treatment plan for you. The following include some of the most common fertility treatments to help with conceiving in your 20s and 30s.

  • Oral or injectable fertility medications can help regulate your cycle and induce ovulation.
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI) can boost your odds of conceiving by using a catheter to insert washed and prepared sperm into your uterus.
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF) can improve your chance of welcoming a healthy baby. The process involves multiple steps, including ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization and embryo transfer. You can also include preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).
  • Donor services, including donor eggs, sperm and embryos, can help you achieve pregnancy if you or your partner do not have enough high-quality eggs or sperm.

Egg freezing is also a great option if you want to postpone motherhood and save your eggs until you’re ready to welcome a baby in the future.
