IVF, or in vitro fertilization, is an effective treatment that makes parenthood possible
At our Indianapolis fertility center, IVF is a highly effective fertility treatment. This type of assisted reproduction consists of combining a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm in the laboratory. Following fertilization of the egg, a doctor transfers one of the resulting embryos to the woman’s uterus. The in vitro fertilization process is incredibly effective at helping patients bypass a range of fertility challenges and fulfill their dream of parenthood.
Who needs IVF?
When an individual or a couple comes to our Indianapolis fertility center, a doctor thoroughly reviews their medical history and has them undergo a series of tests. After reviewing this information, the doctor can determine whether the patient is a good candidate for in vitro fertilization.
The following list provides some examples of conditions this treatment can help overcome.
Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. Issues with the fallopian tubes are one of the most-common reasons a woman needs in vitro fertilization. These issues can prevent the sperm from reaching the egg, or the fertilized egg from entering the uterus. Fallopian tube blockage or damage can result from endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or previous surgery in the abdomen or pelvis.
Diminished ovarian reserve. As the quality and quantity of a woman’s eggs decrease with age, some women over the age of 35 have difficulty conceiving without fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization.
Ovulation challenges. This treatment can correct issues from disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which affect the regulation of reproductive hormones that help women ovulate regularly.
Multiple miscarriages or unsuccessful fertility treatments. If a woman has had numerous miscarriages or has undergone a variety of unsuccessful fertility treatments, she’s likely a candidate for in vitro fertilization.
After helping patients discover the cause of their fertility barriers, our skilled doctors work with them to determine whether IVF will give them the best chance of having a baby.
What the treatment entails
IVF is a straightforward process that involves a series of steps. First, the intended mother takes ovulation induction medications that cause multiple eggs to mature. After the eggs have grown to the ideal size, a doctor retrieves them during a short outpatient procedure. An embryologist then fertilizes the eggs with sperm from the woman’s partner or a donor. Finally, a doctor transfers one of the resulting embryos to the woman’s uterus.
