Fertility Surgery

Fertility surgery can help women bypass a range of fertility challenges

Fertility surgery is often an effective tool that the doctors at our Indianapolis fertility center use when a woman has certain fertility challenges. If a woman is a good candidate for surgery, it can be the solution that allows her to finally fulfill her dream of motherhood. Our doctors will work closely with each patient to determine whether this option is right for her.

Learn how fertility surgery can help women build their family

When a woman first comes to our clinic, her doctor will often recommend an ultrasound and bloodwork. In some cases, the woman will require a more extensive analysis of her reproductive health. In that case, the doctor might recommend a surgical evaluation of infertility. A fertility specialist may also recommend surgery for women with certain conditions.

Endometriosis. If a woman has symptoms like heavy and painful periods, our doctor may recommend a surgical evaluation of infertility to diagnose endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows on structures outside the uterus.

Uterine and pelvic issues. Surgery can help our doctors diagnose and treat ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, adhesions and congenital anomalies of the pelvic organs, such as a uterine or vaginal septum.

Fallopian tube damage or disease. Our fertility specialists often suggest surgery for women who have a blockage in the fallopian tubes. Such a blockage can prevent sperm from reaching the egg or keep the fertilized egg from reaching the uterus. The doctor can usually locate the source of the blockage and fix it during surgery.

The doctors at our Indianapolis fertility center work with women to determine whether surgery is the best way to get them one step closer to becoming a mother.

The two most common types of surgery fertility doctors recommend

Laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are the most common types of fertility surgery. These procedures are minimally invasive and use a thin, lighted telescope. A camera on the telescope then transmits images to a screen where the doctor can analyze the woman’s pelvic structures.

Hysteroscopy. Doctors use this procedure to examine the uterus. The patient receives sedation before the doctor places the telescope through the vagina and cervix. This surgery can facilitate diagnosis and treatment of a uterine septum, polyps and fibroids.

Laparoscopy. A doctor can utilize laparoscopy to evaluate, and sometimes treat, endometriosis, scar tissue and fibroids. After the patient receives general anesthesia, the doctor passes the telescope through a small incision in the woman’s belly button. A two to three day recovery usually follows.

By using fertility surgery when necessary, the skilled doctors at our Indianapolis fertility center help women overcome their fertility struggles. With the right diagnosis, patients can receive the treatment that can help them develop a healthy pregnancy. Contact us to learn more about surgical evaluation of infertility and effective treatments.
