Egg Freezing Success

Learn more about egg freezing success rates and what affects them

Our Indianapolis fertility clinic helps patients determine whether a frozen egg cycle is right for them. They do so by providing egg freezing success rates from ASRM, or the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Additionally, they help patients understand what can affect success.

ASRM, and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, or SART, announced in 2012 that they would no longer consider egg freezing experimental. This was a big step forward for this method of fertility preservation. A factor in this shift was the success of the flash-freezing technique called vitrification. Vitrification significantly reduces the chance that damaging ice crystals will form in the frozen eggs.

Comparing egg freezing success rates to those of fresh eggs

When comparing the results of frozen egg cycles and fresh egg cycles during IVF, ASRM found these cycles had similar results. This finding came from several randomized controlled trials.

Fertilization rates. The studies showed that 74% of frozen eggs fertilized and 73% of fresh eggs fertilized.

Implantation rates. The studies showed that 40% of frozen eggs implanted in the uterus and 41% of fresh eggs implanted.

Pregnancy rates. The studies showed that 55% of the embryo transfers from frozen eggs resulted in pregnancy and 56% of the embryo transfers from frozen eggs resulted in pregnancy.

They also found that a frozen egg cycle didn’t increase the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, birth defects or developmental deficits.

Factors that can affect egg freezing success

The chances of frozen eggs eventually resulting in the birth of a healthy baby depend on a variety of factors. Fertility specialists at our clinic help patients fully understand these factors before beginning an egg freezing cycle.

Age of the patient at the time of egg retrieval. ASRM stresses that a patient’s age at the time of egg freezing directly affects the success of their future frozen egg cycle during IVF.

Results of ovarian reserve testing. Bloodwork and an ultrasound can reveal information about the quality and quantity of a woman’s eggs. This information can help predict egg freezing success.

Freezing technique. The use of vitrification when freezing eggs increases the chance that they will be viable for use after thawing.

Lab quality. The quality of a lab can affect the success of egg freezing. Our Indianapolis fertility clinic utilizes leading-edge technologies and highly qualified lab technicians.

Our clinic supports patients during each step of the exciting egg freezing process so that they can preserve their fertility and build a family when they’re ready. Contact us for more information about egg freezing and a frozen egg cycle.
