Frequently Asked Questions

You likely have many questions about donated eggs and the process of conceiving with them.

Below are a few of the most frequently asked questions about donated eggs. If you have more questions, please contact us.

What is egg donation?

Egg donation is the process of receiving donated eggs from another woman so that they can be fertilized and transferred to an intended mother through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Why might I need donated eggs?

There are multiple reasons why the use of donated eggs may be the best treatment option to build your family. Some include premature ovarian failure, multiple failed IVF cycles, poor embryo development, advanced maternal age, or a history of treatment with chemotherapy or radiation. Same-sex male couples may also use donated eggs with a gestational carrier.

How successful is egg donation?

The success of egg donation varies based on many factors, including the quality of the donor eggs, quality of sperm and nature of the receiving couple’s cause of infertility. Women who are older, who have experienced multiple failed IVF cycles using their own eggs, or who have undergone certain medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation have all seen success with donated eggs.

Where can I find an egg donor?

Midwest Fertility provides a database of our donors for you to review and choose from.

Do I get to choose what my donor looks like before I get my donated eggs?

Yes, our database features donor profiles and childhood pictures for you to review as you make your selection. You’ll be able to review descriptions of their physical characteristics like height, weight, hair and eye color, and more.

Will my egg donor know who I am?

Our internal egg donor program is non-identified. Some women may have a known donor, such as a relative or a friend.

Whether or not you disclose that conception of your child occurred as a result of donor eggs is your decision. However, we strongly encourage you to consult The Cabin to help you in this decision making process.

Will I know who my egg donor is?

Our egg donor program is non-identified. You will have access to important information about our egg donors to make your decision. However, you will not be given the name of your donor or potential donors.

Does my egg donor have to come from the Midwest Fertility database?

No your donor does not. While we pride ourselves on providing a wide variety of donors, if our internal options do not meet your criteria, we are willing to partner with other donor agencies.

How long does the egg donation process take?

The process of receiving donated eggs takes approximately one month.

What is the first step in the process of selecting donor eggs?

To start the process of selecting an egg donor, you will need to schedule an appointment with one of our physicians.

How much does using an egg donor cost?

When you come in for your initial appointment, you will meet with a business office representative to discuss cost, insurance coverage and financing options regarding treatment using donor services.

Is viewing the donor database free?
