Discover the difference between an OB/GYN and fertility doctor
Midwest Fertility Specialists (MFS) often helps hopeful parents curious about the difference between an OB/GYN and fertility doctor. Put simply, an OB/GYN is an obstetrician and gynecologist, while a fertility doctor is a reproductive endocrinologist. But the big question is, who can offer the best support when you’re trying to become pregnant? Our Indiana fertility center has the answer.
A deeper look into the difference between an OB/GYN and fertility doctor
When you’re trying to conceive, it can be tricky to determine who to turn to for support. OB/GYNs and fertility doctors both have a role to play. However, the primary factor in knowing who to receive treatment from is how long you’ve been trying to become pregnant.
When to see an OB/GYN. Understanding the difference between an OB/GYN and fertility doctor begins with your fertility needs. When you start on the path to parenthood, you might visit your OB/GYN to receive a Pap smear, pelvic exam and bloodwork. While OB/GYNs have completed medical school and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, they are not typically experts in fertility challenges.
- If you’re 35 or older and have been trying to conceive for at least six months, your OB/GYN should refer you to a fertility doctor.
- They should also refer you to a fertility doctor if you’re under 35 and have been trying to become pregnant for more than a year.
In addition, you might receive a referral if you’ve had more than one miscarriage or have a condition that could affect your fertility.
When to see a reproductive endocrinologist. Visiting a fertility doctor is helpful when trying to become pregnant. Such a doctor has completed the same training as an OB/GYN and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology. This type of specialist can determine why you’re having trouble conceiving. They can also create and implement a customized treatment plan to help you bring home a baby.
After you become pregnant with the support of a fertility doctor, you’ll later receive prenatal care from your OB/GYN. This is just another difference between an OB/GYN and fertility doctor.
