Discover the connection between caffeine and fertility challenges
The doctors at our Indianapolis fertility clinic want patients to know how the link between caffeine and fertility can affect their journey to have a baby. Because caffeine is a stimulant, it can narrow the blood vessels and increase heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism and urine output. This can all have a negative effect on fertility health and could increase the risk of miscarriage.
What to know about caffeine and fertility health
The good news is that you probably don’t need to give up all caffeine. The potentially negative effects of caffeine on fertility and pregnancy are primarily seen when people consume more than 200 mg of caffeine a day. This is equivalent to about two eight-ounce cups of coffee.
If you regularly consume more than 200 mg of caffeine a day, there are numerous ways to cut back.
Gradually reduce caffeine intake. Avoid the headaches, fatigue and irritability that can come with quitting caffeine cold turkey by slowly reducing caffeine consumption each week. For example, if you typically drink four cups of coffee each day, you can reduce that by one cup per week.
Switch to decaf or low-caffeine tea. You can ease into your caffeine cut back by swapping caffeinated beverages for decaf coffee or low-caffeine tea.
Drink more water. Minimize caffeine withdrawal symptoms by increasing your water intake. This is especially helpful for reducing the intensity of headaches.
Eat healthy food. Stabilize your energy and mood while cutting back on caffeine by adopting a nutritious diet rich in protein, iron, healthy fats and fresh produce.
Move your body. Get an energy boost when you typically reach for caffeine by engaging in 30 minutes of light to moderate exercise.
Our Indianapolis fertility clinic has found that these practices can be effective ways for patients to reduce the impact of caffeine and fertility challenges.
