Thyroid Health and Fertility

Learn more about thyroid health and fertility

Learn more about thyroid health and fertilityThe doctors at our Indianapolis fertility center often find a strong connection between thyroid health and fertility. Because of this, it’s important to test a patient’s TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone, level. The level of this hormone indicates whether the patient has a thyroid issue that could be a barrier on their path to parenthood.

What do you need to know about thyroid health and fertility?

During a patient’s fertility testing, we often determine whether they’re experiencing certain thyroid conditions by checking their TSH level. We will also examine their neck and glands. If we discover a TSH level that is too high or too low, or we notice swelling or abnormal masses during the exam, the patient might have a thyroid disorder.

Hypothyroidism. A key component of thyroid health and fertility is determining whether a patient has hypothyroidism. This condition is the result of an underactive thyroid gland that produces low hormone levels. Hypothyroidism can cause weight gain, fatigue, constipation, heavier periods and other uncomfortable symptoms. Regarding fertility, hypothyroidism can affect ovulation by causing irregular or even absent periods. In men, hypothyroidism can lower sperm count, motility and morphology.

Hyperthyroidism. This condition consists of the thyroid gland producing more TSH hormone than it should. This excess of TSH can disrupt the release of an egg by causing incredibly light or irregular periods. Hyperthyroidism in men can affect sperm morphology.

An additional concern is that an undiagnosed thyroid condition can increase the risk of miscarriage. However, the specialists at our Indianapolis fertility center can help reduce this risk by closely monitoring the patient’s TSH level and working with them to create an effective treatment plan.

How do we treat thyroid conditions?

The first step in overcoming thyroid issues is having a doctor at our Indianapolis fertility center evaluate your TSH level and general fertility. This can be especially beneficial for those having difficulty conceiving or irregular periods, and for individuals who have had two or more miscarriages.

After the doctor diagnoses a thyroid issue, he or she often treats it with medication, which can help regulate hormone levels. With this effective treatment, many patients can move past their thyroid health and fertility issues to fulfill their dream of parenthood.
