It’s Fibroid Awareness Month

Learn how to overcome the fertility challenges of fibroids during Fibroid Awareness Month

Learn how to overcome the fertility challenges of fibroids during Fibroid Awareness MonthDuring Fibroid Awareness Month, the Indianapolis fertility doctors at our clinic want to help patients learn more about fibroid treatment and the symptoms of this issue. Uterine fibroids are one of the most common fertility obstacles. By increasing awareness of this issue, patients can receive the right care and move past the discomfort of fibroids.

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are muscular tumors that are almost always benign, but they can make it difficult for a patient to conceive. These uterine growths can also cause abdominal pain and heavy periods.

These growths can lead to fertility issues if they grow in or into the uterine cavity, where the embryo develops. Patients with small fibroids that grow within the muscle or on the surface of the uterus might not have trouble conceiving. Regardless of where the fibroids grow, our Indianapolis fertility doctors can help patients move past the obstacles that these growths can cause.

During Fibroid Awareness Month, discover how doctors diagnose fibroids

Fertility specialists typically use a pelvic exam and ultrasound to diagnose fibroids. During the pelvic exam, the doctor can sometimes feel irregularities in the shape of the uterus, which often prompts them to perform an ultrasound. The ultrasound allows the doctor to examine the patient’s uterus and confirm the presence of fibroids. In some cases, the doctor may recommend a surgical evaluation of infertility.

A key component of Fibroid Awareness Month is understanding when to seek an evaluation for fibroids. The most common symptoms of this condition include heavy, painful periods, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, constipation, and aching in the back or legs.

Our clinic provides effective fibroid treatment

An important part of Fibroid Awareness Month is gaining insight into how our Indianapolis fertility doctors provide fibroid treatment.

After the doctor determines the size and location of the fibroids, they work with the patient to develop a treatment plan. If the fibroids are affecting a patient’s fertility, the doctor will likely need to remove them with minimally invasive surgery.

Hysteroscopy. During a hysteroscopy, the doctor passes a thin, lighted telescope through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. They then inject gas or fluid to expand the uterus and improve visibility. The telescope transmits images to a screen, allowing the doctor to evaluate the uterus. Next, the doctor uses a specialized tool to remove the fibroids. The doctor typically recommends this procedure when the fibroids are in the uterine cavity.

Laparoscopy. Patients with small fibroids in the wall or on the outside of the uterus will likely receive a laparoscopy. This procedure involves the doctor passing a thin tube through an incision in the belly button. The doctor then uses gas to inflate the abdomen. They then pass a small telescope through the incision to provide an in-depth view of the uterus and remove the fibroids.

Our clinic works closely with patients to ensure they receive the right fertility diagnosis and fibroid treatment to help them fulfill the dream of parenthood. Contact us for more information about fibroid treatment.
