When Should I Consider IVF?

In vitro fertilization is the best method of treatment for a variety of types of infertility.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of the most effective infertility treatments available today. IVF is a method of assisted reproduction that replicates the process of natural conception. A man’s sperm and a woman’s egg are combined in a laboratory to create an embryo, which is then transferred to the woman’s uterus.

In the video above, Dr. Robert Colver, reproductive endocrinologist and fertility specialist at Midwest Fertility, talks about some of the scenarios in which IVF may be an appropriate treatment option.

IVF was originally developed for couples in which the woman’s fallopian tubes were absent or damaged. With IVF, the events normally occurring in the fallopian tubes, including fertilization and early embryo development, occur in the laboratory instead. IVF success has progressed to the point where it is now an alternative, if not the treatment of choice, for many couples with impaired fertility.
