Laparoscopy

Learn how laparoscopy can help you bypass various fertility challenges

Laparoscopy helps the doctors at our Indianapolis fertility clinic discover why some women have difficulty conceiving. With this information, they can develop an effective treatment plan. Our team uses this type of surgical fertility evaluation to diagnose and treat endometriosis, scar tissue and fibroids. We can also perform this type of surgery to repair blocked fallopian tubes.

The benefits of laparoscopy

Many times, this procedure provides relief to women who have been struggling to conceive. Because this procedure allows fertility specialists to gain an in-depth view of a woman’s uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, it often delivers the answers that bloodwork and ultrasounds cannot. It also offers a range of other benefits.

Provides helpful explanations. Our Indianapolis fertility clinic doctors can give answers and relief to women who are experiencing pain or infertility.

Corrects fertility issues. During this surgical fertility evaluation, the surgeon can sometimes treat ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes and pelvic adhesions.

Uses small incisions. Because laparoscopy only involves a few small incisions, there is minimal scarring and discomfort. This also means the woman will likely require less pain medication.

Minimizes risk. The thin telescope and other instruments that the doctors use for this surgery significantly lower the risk of tissue damage and blood loss.

Shortens recovery time. Women typically only require two to three days of recovery time after this procedure.

We can help you decide whether these benefits align with your unique fertility needs.

What can you expect during the procedure?

Before this procedure, you’ll meet with a doctor at our Indianapolis fertility clinic to discuss the typical protocol and ask any questions.

When it’s time for the laparoscopy procedure, you’ll receive general anesthesia before the doctor passes a thin tube, called a cannula, through an incision in your belly button. They then inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide to increase visibility.

Next, the doctor passes a small telescope called a laparoscope through the incision. This device transmits images to a video monitor, allowing the doctor to receive a comprehensive view of your reproductive organs. They can also take a biopsy and make certain repairs during this time.

After the doctor removes the laparoscope, they close the incision with stitches or surgical tape. You’ll go home soon after and will need to rest for two to three days.

After you recover, you’ll come to our clinic for a post-operative appointment where your fertility doctor will discuss the results of the procedure and plan the next steps. The main goal is to get you on the path to take home a healthy baby.
